I would say this depends on the surface and the activity. Feet evolved to walk on natural surfaces (sand, earth, grass etc). The problem is most of the surfaces we walk on are hard (tarmac, concrete) so the feet need the protection of footwear. Unless wearing sandals in the Great British fashion I would always recommend wearing socks. Partly to prevent blisters from friction, but also for hygiene. Socks are generally changed daily and the washing machine will take care of most bacteria and fungi, however our shoes are rarely cleaned inside, and can harbour all sorts of fauna. Whilst one gets better adhesion to the ground in bare feet for some contact sports this does leave people open to fungal, viral and bacterial infections of the feet. The use of communal showers and changing facilities can also leave sports persons susceptible to such infections. Cross infection can be reduced by keeping the feet covered in such areas.
