What are the current targets/performance?
In 2003/4, Oxfordshire produced 309,500 tonnes of ‘arisings’ – that is materials for recycling and disposal. This is increasing at about 1% a year. Recycling in Oxfordshire – that is the four districts and the City – has been very poor to date but is now increasing. All now have some kerbside collection although the arrangements for collection/separation differ, as does the materials collected for recycling. In 2002/3 the lowest recycling rate was in Cherwell District (10%) and the best was the district of South Oxfordshire (20%). There are some waste reduction initiatives by the county/districts/city councils– grants for re-usable nappies, public education materials and compost bins for homes. According to the model used by the consultants Enviros, Oxfordshire as a whole will reach 42% recycling by 2009/10.
