What are the current recommendations for mask and respirator use by members of the general public?
CDC has written a guidance document for the general public in which surgical masks are the suggested minimum level of protection for persons who must go into crowded public places or be at group meetings during an influenza pandemic. N-95 respirators are the recommended minimum level of protection for those who care for pandemic influenza patients at home or have close contact with sick people in other settings. The best ways to protect oneself and others from pandemic influenza, however, are to avoid crowded places and large gatherings, practice social distancing (stay 3 to 6 feet from one another), wash hands, and observe cough etiquette. Masks and respirators are measures to use when close contact with others is unavoidable.
