What are the criteria for tenure and probation?
We have probation, not tenure (or tenure-track). The difference between tenure-track and probation is as follows. Tenure-track: tenure is not only not automatic, but tenure is withheld unless there is a strong reason to grant it. Probation: the contract becomes permanent unless there is a strong reason to withhold it. At Warwick, probation is primarily a developmental device for giving newly appointed faculty members special consideration and assistance for a defined period, by the end of which they should be able to demonstrate proven abilities in teaching, research, and administration. During probation, performance is reviewed annually against clearly defined criteria and expectations. The university’s probation guidelines are available here. At the end of the period, probation is confirmed, conditional on satisfactory progress. Otherwise, the person is deemed not to have passed probation and the contract is terminated.
