France and Germany were involved in the war. It was started because the French were angry that Prince Leopold of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen, a Catholic cousing of William I of Prussia, was named ruler of Spain after overthrowing Isabella II. Despite peaceful negotiations, the French demanded of Benedetti that William would not tolerate no future Spanish candidacy for Leopold. The king refused, and informed Bismarck of the event. Bismarck wanted a war with France to complete unification, and released an edited version of the dispatch. This made its appear that William had insulted the French ambassador. The French government fell for this, and declared war on July 19. The Germans quickly won–they even captured the French leader, Napoleon III. France captiulated on January 28, 1871. In the treaty, Germany annexed Alsace and Lorrain–two territories viewed as very important by the French.
