What are the costs of running a VPN connection?
There are several costs associated with running the VPN (none having to do with money, I might add). First, there’s some network traffic overhead involved with VPN connections. You probably won’t notice the difference over a high bandwidth network connection, but you’ll definitely notice a speed difference over dial-up. Second, when you’re connected to the VPN, ALL network traffic goes through the VPN and NONE of it goes over your local LAN. When the VPN is active, you won’t have access to locally networked printers or file shares. You’ll have to disconnect the VPN connection before those resources will again be available.
