Who teaches these classes? Students apply for the program in their sophomore year and take two core courses in moral and political theory. At least one of these core courses must be an upper-level theory course beyond the introductory courses Philosophy 20, Introduction to Moral Theory and Philosophy 30/Public Policy 103A, Introduction to Political Philosophy. We offer two advanced theory courses, especially designed for our students, Philosophy 171 and Philosophy 170. In their junior year students take Ethics in Society 77, The Ethics of Social Decisions, which has a “service-learning” component. This course integrates theory and practice around such diverse issues as environmental justice, children s citizenship, and poverty. Students also take an undergraduate course to gain depth in a particular field of interest that they are considering writing about in their senior thesis.
