What are the construction requirements for steps?
(1) Measured from the belt to the edge of the step, the minimum depth of a step is 12 inches and the maximum depth is 14 inches. (2) Step width cannot be less than the width of the belt to which it is attached. (3) Measured from the upper surface of one step to the upper surface of the next step above, the distance between steps must be at least 16 feet and the steps must be equally spaced along the belt. (4) A step must be attached to the belt so its surface approximates a right angle with the face of the belt enabling the step to travel in basically a horizontal position with the “up” and “down” path of the belt. (5) The working (upper) surface of a step must be made of either a material having nonslip characteristics (possessing a coefficient of friction of not less than 0.5) or be completely covered with a securely attached nonslip tread.
