What are the complications of hysteroscopy?
Hysteroscopy is a very safe operation when done by experienced gynecologists, with a complication rate of 0.5 to one percent. Most common complications include recurrence of abnormal uterine bleeding; uterine perforation; fluid overload, such as water intoxication (a dangerous absorption of low electrolyte solution), pulmonary edema, and hyponatremic encephalopathy (low sodium level due to absorption of fluid). Other complications include infection and pain in the shoulder and neck area due to the gas used to perform the procedure.
