What are the common symptoms that somebody may have cancer?
Different cancers can present in different ways. Some are benign (not serious) and can be present for years without causing any problems. Some cancers can have metabolic effects and cause changes such as a pituitary tumour. The pituitary gland secretes a number of different hormones that control different functions that occur in your body. If you have a secreting tumour then this can cause excess amounts of the hormone to be produced. This can have different effects depending on what hormone is increased. If a tumour in this area is large then it may compress the optic nerve and vision will be affected. Other tumours that are aggressive and develop quickly may cause unexplained weightloss in a short period of time, night sweats, fever and fatigue. Cancers of the blood may cause symptoms of anaemia if there are too many white blood cells but not enough red blood cells.
