What are the common symptoms of stinging insect allergy?
Generally the signs and symptoms of an insect sting include irritation, redness and swelling in the region of the sting. In some cases, symptoms may become life threatening — when a person experiences anaphylaxis, or an allergic reaction that causes throat itching and swelling and even difficulty breathing. The onset of any of these symptoms is an emergency and warrants immediate medical attention. In order to assist with the breathing, a tracheotomy may be necessary as a life saving intervention. Prompt medical attention generally avoids the need for such drastic treatments. For those who know they’re allergic to insect stings, it may be a good idea to carry an epinephrine pen. It contains medication that you inject yourself to help counteract the life threatening symptoms, and give you more time to receive medical attention.
