What are the common symptoms of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA)?
OSA is a triad of symptoms: 1. Snoring 2. Stopping breathing during sleep 3. Feeling tired during the day and even falling asleep when relaxed ( for example, watching T.V. or reading) Other symptoms which may occur include waking up during the night gasping for breath, changes in memory, concentration or personality, and passing large amounts of urine during the night (although this is often not recognised as a tell-tale symptom). How is OSA diagnosed? The diagnosis is often obvious from the clinical story and examination and is usually confirmed by performing a sleep study, which permits the overnight monitoring of breathing and oxygen levels. What is the treatment for OSA? By and large the most effective treatment is called Continuous Positive Airways Pressure (CPAP) during sleep. This consists of a tight fitting mask which covers the nose or nose and mouth connected to a machine which delivers air under a small amount of pressure to keep the floppy airway open.
