Generally simple bursitis attacks occur around joints that have been over stressed, or injured, generally caused by repeated joint abuse from strenuous activities when you are out of shape — ie: the weekend warrior syndrome. However, doing some rather innocuous physical action in an awkward position can also cause damage to a bursa and bring on a bursitis attack. Can Bursitis be, or become, a serious problem? Sometimes. Normally the swelling (liquid in the sac), with rest, will eventually be absorbed by the body and disappear through normal healing. However, if you have lingering pain, particularly in the shoulder, neck, lower back, hips and knees, you should be seen by a doctor to determine if the affected area has become infected or is a sign of some other serious condition.
