What are the chemical components of opium?
Several effective pain-relieving substances have been isolated from opium. In 1806, Friedrich Serturner extracted the ingredient morphine in its pure form. He named it after the Greek god of sleep, Morpheus. In 1832, codeine was isolated. These substances were found to be more effective in relieving pain, with fewer side effects than pure opium.
