My favourite part about kabuki is the audience. Kabuki actors’s families have been in the art for generations, each family playing a specific part. It is not based on talent in traditional kabuki. People who go to see the plays are usually old rich enthusiats. They like to support a particular actor (or family). So during parts of the performance these audience members will shout the actor’s family name to cheer them on. It seems to be appropriate at parts of the play where the character is showing off to the audience. I hope this can help you some. I don’t know about noh or bunraku.
