What are the characteristics of flying foxes?
Flying fox colonies usually roost in trees, and some species are endangered by hunting and deforestation. The female flying fox typically gives birth to a single pup after a gestation period of four to six months. They live about 30 years in captivity, less in the wild. The largest is the Malayan flying fox, which weighs more than a kilogram and has a wingspan up to 1.7 m. The smallest is the little golden-mantled flying fox that weighs about 200 g, with a wingspan of about 50 cm.
