What are the characteristics of a language- learning disabled child?
Because each child is unique, the characteristics vary from one child to another. However, some general traits which many LLD children share are as follow: Behavioral Characteristics • Hyperactivity • Short attention span • Distractibility • Disorganization • Lack of response to discipline • Failure to follow through with parental requests • Temper outbursts • Low frustration level • Low self-esteem • Impatience • Impulsiveness • Poor relationships with age-level peers Academic- Language Characteristics • Letter or numeral reversals • Unusual spelling errors • Illegible handwriting • Poorly written composition • Frequent calling out of turn in class • Poor study habits • Difficulty copying from blackboard • Difficulty understanding what has been read • Frequent need for repetiton of instructions • Difficulty with concepts involving time and space (words such as “before/after”, “if/then”, “right/left”, and “in/out” are difficult). Of course all children demonstrate some of these traits
