I believed it depends on what MBA you are taking and what position you are currently in. A MBA from a top classes business school means a lot than other business schools. Not only the teaching quality, reputation but also the alumni network will make you stand out from the rest if you hold a MBA from a top business school. Besides, if you are still performing as a programmer or doing some technical roles, your technical domain knowledges should be a more determining fact to see if you can get promoted or earned more. But if you are now already quite senior and will like to move into VP or CIO position, then a broader perspective is defintiely required and this is what MBA can help you. But anyway, I will think it is no harm to take it even though you are a programmer now. It helps you how to communicate with the seniors.
