What are the challenges in developing the PC2S engine?
The main challenge is to determine the right valve combinations to optimize breathing. Like a human body, an engine must breath in and out to operate at a high level of performance and efficiency. The intake and exhaust must be able to flow in and out rapidly with minimum resistance. Optimizing these flows is the greatest challenge. This includes optimizing the mechanics of valve operation. Valving is a highly developed art but there are many options to evaluate such as slide valves versus poppet valves versus reed valves versus rotary valves and mechanical versus electronic versus hydraulic controls. And then there is the issue of optimum flow tuning. Another challenge is to optimize fuel input. Again there are options such as carburetion versus fuel injection. Fuel injection options include mechanical injection versus pneumatic injection utilizing the air pressure and intake flow created when the piston is at the bottom of its stroke.
