Now more than ever, those working in editing and publishing face significant challenges and opportunities — challenges in developing and maintaining skills relevant to diverse publication media; opportunities in exploring the potential of the new media. For editors who teach, these challenges and opportunities come together in curriculum development, and teaching, not only through incorporating the new media in teaching materials, but also through modelling skills appropriate to those media. Implicit in that task is the need to address sometimes competing priorities: Changes in human communication, both in the language and in the technologies used to deliver that communication; standards emerging from professional bodies; criteria established by universities.
