One of the biggest medical stigma is around mental disorders. In terms of the challenges, public awareness and educating the families should be a priority. In any case, I believe that the government should play a more active role. For instance, if there is a patient suffering from schizophrenia in a family, the normal procedure of treatment is to sedate them instead of keeping them awake to make them more functional. What the doctors and families should look for is a medicine to improve their quality of life. This is why we have initiated ‘Family Link’ program which educates the families of patients with mental disorders. We even have a program to help the policemen deal with agitated people or hostage takers on the streets. Part of the education is to ask the policemen to bring the allegedly sick people to the National Center for Mental Health. Accordingly, we made this procedure easier in terms of the paperwork.
