What Are the Causes of Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome?
Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome (posterior tibial nerve neuralgia) is to the foot as the more recognized Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is to the wrist. The tibial nerve that stretches to the inner ankle from the back of the leg becomes entrapped and causes numbness and weakness to the arch of the foot. Pain or a burning sensation to the sole of the foot can also occur. The symptoms tend to get worse during the day, but can often be relieved by rest, massage or elevation. Many conditions can cause Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome. Repetitive or abnormal foot action can cause swelling that compress the tibial nerve. Various medical conditions can also be the underlying cause of the symptoms. Symptoms can vary from person to person. Some people report sharp pain while others report numbness or a change in the way they walk.
Tarsal tunnel syndrome is caused by anything that produces compression on the posterior tibial nerve, such as: • A person with flat feet is at risk for developing tarsal tunnel syndrome, because the outward tilting of the heel that occurs with “fallen” arches can produce strain and compression on the nerve. • An enlarged or abnormal structure that occupies space within the tunnel can compress the nerve. Some examples include a varicose vein, ganglion cyst, swollen tendon, and arthritic bone spur. • An injury, such as an ankle sprain, may produce inflammation and swelling in or near the tunnel, resulting in compression of the nerve. • A person who is overweight may be prone to experiencing pressure on the posterior tibial nerve. • Systemic diseases such as diabetes or arthritis can cause swelling, thus compressing the nerve.
