What are the causes of pruritus ani?
Pruritus ani is a common symptom that can be associated with a wide range of conditions: • Diabetes, liver disease, thyroid disease • Depression, anxiety disorders • Fungal, bacterial and viral infections • Allergic reactions eg, contact dermatitis caused by local anesthetics, such as “-caine” preparations • Antibiotic treatment • Chronic constipation, diarrhea, anal incontinence • Local anal disorders: anal fissures (pruritus ani accompanies anal fissures in 50% of cases),(15,16) hemorrhoids and cryptitis.
