Posterior nosebleeds, while less common, are more serious. The blood can run down the back of the throat, making it difficult to determine the amount of blood loss. A Severe Blow If you get a severe blow to your face, head or nose, it is possible for one of the arteries at the back of your nose to rupture, resulting in a posterior nosebleed.
