What Are the Causes of Metabolic Acidosis?
Metabolic acidosis is a condition where there is too much acid in the blood. A balance is maintained in the body, principally by the kidney, between acid production and removal. Certain conditions, according to the Merck manual, can disrupt this balance in favor of too much acidity, from ingested acid and/or overproduction of acidity on one hand to decreased acid excretion and excessive loss of alkaline fluids on the other. There are different types of metabolic acidosis, each with peculiar causes.
