What are the causes of hoarseness?
Hoarseness is caused by a problem in the vocal cords. In adults a virus is most often responsible for the development of hoarseness or laryngitis when no other symptoms are present. How long will hoarseness last? Hoarseness could last just one night. As with any symptom of an upper respiratory tract infection, hoarseness may linger after other symptoms disappear. When hoarseness is mild, the most common cause is cigarette smoke. Here are some triggers to persistent hoarseness: • cysts on the vocal cords • cancer (but this cause is very rare) • overuse of the voice What can I do to heal my vocal cords? • Nature must heal the inflamed area. • Humidifying the air with a vaporizer or taking in fluids can offer some relief. • Rest the vocal cords.
