What are the causes of greasy scalp?
The sebaceous glands in our skin are distributed over our entire body, but on the scalp they are particularly large and plentiful. They produce sebum (grease) which gets on to the skin surface via the hair follicle aperture, turns into a thin liquid making it able to spread rapidly. Skin which gets greasy quickly arises when the sebaceous glands are overactive, and the flow of sebum is particularly high as result. We would then describe this as seborrhoea. Many things that can cause this: Disturbances in the hormone balance Poor nutrition Stress Chemical and mechanical factors Environmental factors In order to stop the skin getting too greasy again too quickly, it needs a shampoo which is effective at absorbing the surplus grease, without irritating the skin or stimulating the sebaceous glands. Most importantly the scalp needs to be washed gently and not more then 2-3 times a week in order to avoid stimulating the sebaceous glands.
