What are the causes of cholecystitis?
Your cholecystitis may be caused by any of the following: • Gallstones: Normally, bile flows from your gallbladder to your bowels through a small duct (tube). Sometimes your bile becomes hard and forms into stones of different sizes. These are called gallstones. When gallstones block the duct, they may cause cholecystitis. This is the most common cause of cholecystitis. • Gallbladder damage: You may get cholecystitis when your gallbladder does not get enough blood flow. Your gallbladder may also become damaged when you are very sick. Other causes of damage to your gallbladder may include recent surgery and allergic reactions. • Infection: Cholecystitis may be caused by infections. Infections are caused by germs called bacteria. Infections that cause cholecystitis are more common in people with AIDS.
