What Are the Causes of Childhood Glaucoma?
Significance Childhood glaucoma is a very rare condition. According to the Glaucoma Research Foundation, glaucoma occurs in about 1 out of every 10,000 U.S. births. Causes Childhood glaucoma occurs when the eye’s drainage system develops incorrectly, leading to increased pressure within the eye. This condition may be inherited. Features Symptoms of childhood glaucoma may include light sensitivity, large eyes, watery eyes, and cloudiness within the cornea. Treatment Surgery may be needed to correct the eye’s drainage system. Medications in the form of oral medicines or eye drops may be used either to reduce fluid production or to increase the amount of fluid drained from the eye. Warning Untreated glaucoma can damage the optic nerve, resulting in loss of vision. Once vision is lost, it cannot be restored. Prompt treatment is necessary to preserve and protect vision.
