What Are the Causes of Central Retinal Vein Occlusion?
Central retinal vein occlusion, or CRVO, describes a closure of the central retinal vein. The retinal vein carries blood away from the retina, and a closure in the vein causes the blood flow to back up. Tiny hemorrhages and swelling develop in portions of the retina as a result. CRVO causes sudden, painless vision loss that can range in severity from mild to severe. CRVO results from medical conditions that cause damage or pressure to the veins inside the body.
