Hi, I work in Social Housing, various council estates suffer loads from ASB (anti-social behaviour), There are a large amount of different reasons why ASB occurs however, The Police have introduced The ‘Safer neighbourhood Teams’ which specifically work with ASB and local crime at ground level. This has been very effective on the tougher estates and certain individual who insist on continually behaving Anti-socially.

There can be a large no. of causes of anti-social behaviour. Primarily it is the trigger which again may be of many types: but basically it is the make-up of the individual that counts. When the same irritant acts on two persons, how come one person just grins and bears it while another takes out his anger in indulging in antisocial activity? Why? Then again another may even start doing something good…..such people belong to the minority of silent saints….It takes all types in this world…. In India, I have actually seen this behaviour: a prominent local politician died. His body was to be laid for public viewing in a school ground. Adjacent to the school ground were a lot of shops lining both sides of a road. That night, (the previous one that is), a lower middle class, man, about 27 – 30 years I would say, inebriated, started throwing stones and breaking the neon lights of some shops which were all closed and had no security guard. This occurred at about 2 or 3 am in the morning

Well, the traditional family structure is breaking down at a rapid rate. The ‘family unit’, was where we were supposed to learn certain social values and interactions, this was complemented by school, sport clubs, hobby associations, church, the community. We now find that there are so many single parents barely coping with themselves, they can’t and don’t find the time to teach their kids how to interact socially. These kids grow up and have kids and this behaviour or lack thereof is perpetuated. Whereas before, we’d be more careful of how much we misbehaved because we had a conscience of sorts or were worried about the consequences (teachers seeing us, friends’ parents reporting us) that would hold us back from causing sh*t. Schools, teachers have distanced themselves from that part of education and see their role as only to teach the said subjects, morals, discipline has been handed solely to parents (some of whom as mentioned above are barely coping). And the cycle goes on. We see
