What are the causes and symptoms of West Nile virus?
The exact mechanism of WNV-caused illnesses remains unclear. However, it is suspected that the virus enters the host’s blood stream and multiples. It can then develop to the point where it crosses the blood brain-barrier, which separates the blood from the central nervous system. When this occurs, the virus can infect the brain, spinal cord, and other vital systems, creating a potentially deadly inflammatory response. Source: The Gale Group.
