According to the National Institute of Mental Health, bipolar disorder has become a major cause of disability for people ages 15 to 44 in the United States and Canada. Symptoms of the complex mental illness are marked by extreme changes in mood, resulting in mania and dark depressive episodes. Bipolar disorder has a variety of causal factors (i.e. heredity) and treatments which can provide valuable insight into the course of the disease.
