What are the categories of social interaction?
Parents can focus on six categories to help their children develop social skills. They are: • cooperative play • conversation • empathy • friendships • dealing with conflict • self regulation These six areas are usually very challenging for children with Asperger syndrome. Each play activity and each attempt at social interaction should try to incorporate at least one of these categories into the program. Social stories are also very useful in this kind of autism therapy. They alert children to other peoples feelings and help build expectations. They also help children script some social interactions. Interaction skills are natural for most children, but AS child need to learn them deliberately. Asperger social skills training is a lifelong intervention that continues to grow with the child.
