What are the California Standards for the Teaching Profession (CSTP)?
The CSTP are the state-adopted standards that describe the essential aspect of the teaching profession. They include five classroom teaching standard, and a sixth standard for professional practice beyond the classroom. Each standard has sub-categories called “Elements”. All teacher preparation programs, and new teacher support and induction programs in California must be based upon the CSTP by the end of 2003. Many districts are aligning their teacher evaluation systems to the CSTP as well, so that all teacher quality systems are based upon the same standards.
