The user is often the biggest threat to a secure computer system. As long as there is up-to-date security software (eg: Antivirus, Antispyware, Firewall) installed on the system, users are usually the primary cause of infections, data loss, and over all system vulnerability. Either by opening emails with attachments from people they don’t know or aren’t expecting messages from, visiting websites they should not visit, or clicking on messages and pressing “OK” whenever they see a popup or warning even if it isn’t a real warning, people will be the direct cause of most infections and problems. Therefore, user education is the most effective tool for protecting an organizations computer, technology, and information assets. Teach people not to press OK unless they recognize and know the source and cause of the message. Teach people not to open emails unless they expect them.
