What are the best ways to get inshape/ready for a high school freshmen volleyball tryout?
You’ll want to build your endurance and reflexes. Our tryouts always started off with the mile run – 10 minutes or you didn’t make the cut. As far as conditioning, you’ll want to build your leg muscles. Do calf dips on stairs and practice your jumping. We had a tape line set at the height of a regulation volleyball net on the wall of the gym that you had to jump up and touch over. 25 jumps with the right hand over, 25 with the left hand over and 50 with both hands over. Make sure to keep your ball skills sharp too. If you’ve played for 2 years already, you should know how to control a bumped ball. If I couldn’t find anyone to practice with, I’d just work on bumping the ball straight up as many times as I could in a row. If you can convince a friend to work with you, have her throw the ball and you get it back. Work on your side lunges and digs. Also, it’s a great time to work on ball placement. You’ll want to practice bumping the ball to a good setting position. Best of luck to you!
