What are the best ways to build energy saving features into a home?
A. When you build a home, budget funds so that the most important features are built in from the beginning. For example, deluxe appliances, paneling, and expensive wall coverings can wait, but don’t economize on such important energy saving features as: Wall and ceiling insulation and insulation around electrical and plumbing chases and other potential leakage; Double-glazing or storm sash to insulate window areas against cold or heat; Caulking around windows and doors to prevent the infiltration of air. Remember that insulation is an investment that will save you money-and ever more expensive fuel-in the long run. Be sure to keep posted on any tax advantages involved with adding fuel-saving features to your home. Blueprints for each of the houses I have designed include a page of energy saving details, which we suggest you incorporate in your new home. You will want to discuss them with your builder. Additionally, some house designs may lend themselves to solar heating facilities.
