Assuming you are on a budget (as most of us are!), I would definately recommend Audacity. It’s available for PC’s, Mac’s and Linux operating systems. Audacity includes some basics, such as a Mixer Toolbar to set the source of the input and set your volume levels and a Meter toolbar so that you can monitor the input levels while you are recording. However, in addition to the basics it provides all kinds of tools for editing your recordings. You can clean up background noise, add effects, mix 2 tracks together (some background music while you’re podcasting?), change the pitch (for the entire recording or just selected sections. Many, many other tools are included, both basic and advanced. I have the program and love it (although I’m still trying to figure out how to use a lot of the tools). And again, it’s FREE!
