I’m partial to cannister vacuums over uprights, personally, because I have hard floors as well as carpet, and the cannister vacs are much more useful for things like bookshelves and ceiling fan blades. That said, I’ve found the Kenmore brand vacuums to be reliable, long-lasting machines that do a good job. It’s easy to get bags for them and, should you ever need a new belt or brush attachment, easy to get those, as well. Sears offers good warranties and has service centers all over the place, so they’re well-backed.
