What are the best things to do to prepare planting area for Leylandi Cypress Trees?
Another method of breaking up clay is to apply a small amount of gypsum to the soil. Depending on the clay percentage of soil, the gypsum will aid in the passing of moisture through the soil (clay soil absorbs moisture). Gypsum will also add calcium to the soil, a primary nutrient for plant growth. The only downside is gypsum will acidify soil slightly (Lower PH) You may want to consider a soil test. These are done relatively cheaply ($10-$20) through local co-op or lawn care company. This will determine exactly where your soil stands on the PH scale and give you a good estimate to how much Gypsum you want to add. Your soil should be in the slightly acidic range for optimum growth (PH= 6.2-6.9) What I do in my business is add a mixture of peat moss, topsoil and sometimes compost to create a loamy soil which is optimal for plant growth. I dig a hole approx. 2X the diameter of the root wide and to a depth just less than that of the root ball (so root ball will be just above soil line). T
