What are the best supplements, feeds or lotions for a horse suffering with sweet itch?
There are a lot of things you need to do with sweet itch patients. It is a lot of hard work, but it is possible to make their lives a whole lot easier. First. Go down to your local agricultural suppliers (where they supply farmers with all their needs). Invest in a bottle of something called Stomoxin. It was a fly spray for cattle when it first came out. My father worked for the company that made it (It was the Wellcome Foundation, but I think it is Smithklein Beecham now) and he used to sell it. He brought some home for our horses. It only takes 1 measure of Stomoxin to 20 parts water) and you can spray it on or wipe it on, and it would work for a good two days. We gave some to a friend whose pony had the most awful sweet itch. She had her own routine. Stable between the hour before dusk to 10 am when mosquitoes are their most active – and out during the other times. She would spray the Stomoxin on the pony daily and the pony would wear a summer sheet while outside and in the stable.
