What are the best routes for cycling in Alaska?
• The triangular route (with a little help from the Alaska Marine Highway) from Haines to Whitehorse to Skagway. Traffic is heavy, but the road has wide shoulders and good visibility. The southern stretch of this road (previously listed under “routes to avoid”) is currently being upgraded; It is being widened and shoulders are being added. This work should be complete by the end of 1996. As of summer 1995, there was a 20-mile stretch between Portage and Seward that can be classified as “possibly dangerous”. • The Richardson Highway from Fairbanks to Valdez is extraordinarily beautiful, paved, and for the most part has wide shoulders.
