The presenting symptoms are considered carefully -voices, handwriting changes, changes in physical appearance and time loss. A careful personal history is taken from the individual and the family members. It is important to rule out any physical disorders that might be causing symptoms similar to dissociative disorder. This is the main part of diagnosing dissociateive disorder. However, psychologists or psychiatrists might use several tests to help them, depending on their own preferences and what is in current use in their workplace. The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory might be one. An IQ test might be administered. The Rorschach might be used. There is no absolute answer.
