All of them have their drawbacks which are purposely built in to induce you to “upgrade” to the pay version. The best of all evils that I’ve found is Limewire; your connection problems could have more to do with your system than Limewire; I’ve never had connection problems with them. You could try Bear Share, but I found connection problems with them! So, go figure; it could have to do with location.
