What are the best diets for my pet?
• Feed commercial diets with high quality ingredients. • Premium diets such as Science Diet, Iams, or Eukanuba are highly recommended. • However, Purina, Kennel Ration, Pedigree, and other well-known brands often suffice. • Avoid “price brands” which are local or store brands sold at bargain prices. Some may sacrifice quality for low cost. • Individual needs vary, so please check with our clinic for the best recommendation for your pet. • Avoid significant amounts of “table food” or “treats". • These foods can “spoil” your pet, encouraging poor eating habits. • Additional harmful calories and fats in treats may lead to obesity and other long-term health problems. • Avoid excessive calories. • “Light Diets” and “Less Active Diets” often provide optimum calories for routine maintenance. • If feeding a regular maintenance diet, reduce the manufacturer’s feeding recommendation by 1/4 to 1/3. • Keep a regular record of your pet’s weight.
