What are the best and worst aspects of working in a zoo?
The animals are by far the best aspect of working in a zoo. I will never tire of working with the animals. I have been so fortunate in my career in that it has allowed me to travel to many overseas countries as well as visit many parks within Australia. Probably the worst part of working at the zoo is the hours. Many people forget that the animals still need feeding and cleaning on holidays such as Christmas and New Years. It can also be tough working in all weather conditions, pouring rain, high temperatures…… Some people think that in a zoo that they will only be working with animals and have little to do with people. What has been your experience? This is not true at all. Yes most of our day is spent with the animals under our care, but a large portion of our day is also spent speaking to members of the public and educating people on the plight of animals in the wild and what they can do to help.
