When I went into the Navy they were UDT. SEALs came about in 1962. Some got into that program. I think just about every negative has several positives on the flip side. The training is some most intense in the world — with a 95% drop-out rate. The good things about that are that they are among the best-trained in the world. As their name indicates, they’re able to operate well in any environment. And the teams would prefer somebody fail during training than to fail on the job. To that end, they do everything in their power to make you want to quit. The job is one of the most dangerous in the world. In Vietnam the ration of enemy killed to US personnel was about the same as today… about 20 to 1. Among the teams it was closer to 200 to 1. What do they do? Pretty much anything. They may gather intelligence. They may go into an enemy stronghold and capture somebody… or execute them. They do things that are never done in places nobody ever goes. There’s no glory for a SEAL. Nobody ever
