What are the benefits of an isotonic drink in comparison to hypotonic or hypertonic sports drinks?
A. A key difference between these types of drinks is the osmolality level which is the level at which a fluid is absorbed. An osmolality level of 270-330 Mosm/kg in an isotonic drink helps to maintain the required concentration of electrolytes (salts) in your blood. Water alone has a very low osmolality level as it typically does not contain electrolytes. Isotonic sports drinks replace fluids and electrolytes whilst providing energy from carbohydrates – ideal for endurance sports, cardiovascular workouts and team sports. Hypotonic sports drinks quickly replace fluids lost from sweating but have a low level of carbohydrates which some athletes such as gymnasts may prefer. Hypertonic sports drinks are very high in carbohydrates and are normally taken after exercise to top up muscle glycogen stores e.g. after ultra distance running events. Q.
