What are the benefits of adding insulation in the basement?
Scott writes from Rochester, Indiana: “I have a 2600 sq.ft house. A good portion of it is living space in the basement. But I have no insulation between the 1st floor and the basement. My laundry room is also downstairs and the dryer draws some moisture. What are the benefits of adding insulation and what type should I use? Should I be concerned about the moisture?” Answer: Insulating between living spaces will improve sound control but it will not help with thermal control and energy efficiency. For sound control, we recommend 3-1/2″ fiberglass batt insulation. Because both spaces are conditioned, there should be no significant movement of air or vapor through the structure between the basement and first floor.
